At Easter, Christmas, Pentecost and other Christian feasts many people traditionally go to church – some to an Orthodox one, some to a Catholic one, some to a Protestant one.
We have put together a list of active Ukrainian churches in Bratislava where you can attend a festive service, arrange a baptism or a wedding, request a prayer service, come to confession or simply attend a Sunday service.

Baptisms, weddings and other sacraments
The sacraments are also performed for people who have arrived recently. Contact the priest in advance by phone: dates are agreed individually, and around the major feasts the schedule is tight.
For a baptism you are usually asked for the child’s birth certificate and the godparents’ details. For a wedding you need identity documents and baptismal certificates for both spouses. Check separately whether your marriage will be registered in the state matrika: a church wedding has civil effect only when the parish is entitled to perform it and the marriage is entered in the register. If you need an officially recognised marriage, ask about this before submitting your documents.
Services in Ukrainian in other Slovak cities
Churches of the Bratislava Greek Catholic Eparchy also operate in Trnava and Nitra. The Prešov Orthodox Eparchy covers the east of the country, where Ukrainian and Rusyn parishes have historically been most numerous — above all in Prešov, Košice, Svidník and Bardejov.
It is best to check service times on the website of the particular eparchy or by phone: in summer and around the major feasts they change, and some services are moved to other churches.
Frequently asked questions
Do you have to be a parishioner to attend a service?
No. Services are open to everyone and no registration is required. You can also come simply to look.
What language are the services in?
In Greek Catholic parishes they are in Ukrainian, in Orthodox ones more often in Church Slavonic, and in Protestant ones in Ukrainian. The sermon is almost always in Ukrainian.
Do the parishes help newcomers?
Yes. Many communities run mutual-help groups, activities for children and clothing exchanges. Announcements are published on the parishes’ social media, so following them is more useful than a one-off visit.
What if the schedule on the website is out of date?
Call the number given. Small parishes update their websites irregularly, but they are happy to answer the phone.
