Gross-from-Net Salary Calculator Slovakia 2026
Employers talk in gross, but you live on the net figure. This calculator works backwards: you enter the amount you want to see in your account and get the gross figure to quote at the interview.

The calculation does not include the child tax bonus — with children the gross needed will be lower. 2026 rates.
Why calculate backwards
The most common interview mistake is to name the amount you want in hand when the employer asks about gross. The difference is about a quarter: to receive 1 200 € net you need around 1 594 € gross. If you say 1 200 €, roughly 927 € will reach your account.
Benchmarks: what gross you need for typical amounts
| I want in hand | Gross needed (approx.) | Cost to the company |
|---|---|---|
| 800 € | about 1 018 € | about 1 386 € |
| 1 000 € | about 1 306 € | about 1 779 € |
| 1 200 € | about 1 594 € | about 2 163 € |
| 1 500 € | about 2 027 € | about 2 761 € |
| 2 000 € | about 2 748 € | about 3 743 € |
These figures assume no children and a signed vyhlásenie. If you have children, the gross needed will be noticeably lower thanks to the tax bonus — 100 € a month per child under 15.
What to say at an interview
Slovak job ads almost always state the salary in gross, often worded as “od 1 500 € brutto”. When you are asked about your expectations, name a gross figure — it is more professional and avoids a misunderstanding when the contract is signed.
It is useful to know a third number as well — the cost of labour. On a gross salary of 1 588 € the company pays about 2 163 €. If an employer says the “budget for the position is 2 200 €”, they most likely mean this figure rather than your gross pay.
Why the exact amount may differ
The calculator covers the basic situation: an ordinary employment contract, full-time, no children and no supplements. The actual payment is affected by premiums for night shifts, weekend and public holiday work, contributions to the third pension pillar, and any sick leave or holiday in a given month.
Frequently asked questions
Why does 1 000 € net work out at 1 306 € gross rather than 1 200 €?
Because deductions are calculated from gross, not from net. Out of 1 306 €, 65,30 € goes on health insurance, 122,76 € on social insurance and 117,94 € on tax. Working backwards always gives a bigger percentage than it first appears.
The employer is offering a dohoda contract — is it calculated the same way?
No. Income under a dohoda has its own contribution scheme, which depends on the type of agreement and on whether you are a student, a pensioner or an ordinary employee. This calculator is designed for a standard employment contract (pracovná zmluva).
