Unemployment Benefit in Slovakia 2026: Conditions, Amount, Duration

From 1 January 2026 unemployment benefit in Slovakia is no longer paid at a single rate for the whole six months — it gradually decreases. Here is who is entitled to it, how much is paid in each of the six months, and why the self-employed most often end up with nothing.

Two conditions, both compulsory

  1. Registration as a jobseeker at the labour office (úrad práce) for your place of residence. Entitlement to the payment cannot start before the day you register.
  2. At least 730 days of unemployment insurance in the last four years before you register. That is two years of insurance.

How the employment ended does not matter. Whether you were dismissed, left of your own accord, or your fixed-term contract expired, it makes no difference to your entitlement.

How much is paid: the amounts fall over time

The payment is calculated from the daily base (DVZ) — your average daily income on which contributions were paid over the two years before registration.

Month of payment Percentage of the daily base
Months 1–3 50%
Month 4 40%
Month 5 30%
Month 6 20%

Previously all six months were paid at 50 per cent. When budgeting for your job search, bear in mind that in the second half of the period the payment drops by more than half.

Maximum amounts

The law caps the daily base. From 1 July 2026 to 30 June 2027 the maximum daily base is €106.5206. This gives the following maximum monthly amounts:

Month 30-day month 31-day month
1–3 €1,597.90 €1,651.10
4 €1,278.30 €1,320.90
5 €958.70 €990.70
6 €639.20 €660.50

The self-employed are usually not entitled to the benefit

This is the most important point for anyone working for themselves. SZČO are not covered by compulsory unemployment insurance. Even if you have paid your social contributions diligently for years, that does not create any entitlement to unemployment benefit.

It can arise in only two situations: if you additionally paid voluntary unemployment insurance, or if you accumulated the required 730 days as an employee within the last four years.

How to apply

The simplest way is when you register at the labour office. The form “Žiadosť o zaradenie do evidencie uchádzačov o zamestnanie” also serves as the application for the benefit, and the data is sent to Sociálna poisťovňa electronically. There is no need to go to Sociálna poisťovňa separately.

Alternatives: electronically via the slovensko.sk portal (you need an electronic ID card with a chip and a qualified electronic signature) or in writing on the form “Žiadosť o dávku v nezamestnanosti”.

The payment arrives by the 15th of the following month if it is transferred to a bank account.

A one-off payment of half the remainder

If you have received the benefit for at least three months and then find a job, you can apply in writing for a one-off payment of 50 per cent of the benefit for the remaining part of the period. This is a separate application; the payment is not awarded automatically.

Frequently asked questions

Does severance pay affect entitlement to unemployment benefit?

No. These are payments from different sources: severance pay comes from the employer, unemployment benefit from Sociálna poisťovňa.

What happens if I find a job in the third month?

When you start work you are removed from the register and the payment stops. But you can apply for the one-off payment of half the remainder if you received the benefit for at least three months.

I worked on a dohoda. Does that count?

It counts if the contract provided a regular monthly income and unemployment insurance contributions were paid. With irregular contracts, usually not.

How long is the benefit paid for?

Six months at most. After that period the payment stops, even if you remain registered at the labour office.
