Temporary Protection Status in Slovakia in 2026: What Changed and How to Extend It
If you are living in Slovakia under dočasné útočisko (temporary protection), you have probably built up a few questions: is the status still valid, do you have to renew anything yourself, and what should you do about your documents. In 2026 there was an important change on this subject that affects practically every Ukrainian holding the status. Let us go through, step by step, what is known today and what is worth checking right now.

What dočasné útočisko is and who is entitled to it
Dočasné útočisko is the temporary protection that Slovakia grants to people forced to leave Ukraine because of the war. It is not the same as a residence permit or refugee status: the procedure is simplified, there is no need to wait for a decision on an individual case, and the status gives you the right to stay in the country legally, work, study and use healthcare. Official information about the programme is maintained by the Ministerstvo vnútra SR on its dočasné útočisko page.
The status is valid throughout the EU and is renewed regularly by decisions of the Council of the European Union — it is at EU level that the date up to which protection remains in force is decided.
The main change: automatic extension until 4 March 2027
Since 23 February 2026 it has been officially confirmed that dočasné útočisko for people who fled the war in Ukraine is automatically extended in Slovakia until 4 March 2027. The official announcement was published by the Ministerstvo vnútra SR in its press release (tlačová správa).
What the extension is based on
The extension rests on an implementing decision of the Council of the EU and on a regulation of the Government of the Slovak Republic dated 21 February 2025. In other words, this is not a one-off Slovak initiative but part of the EU-wide temporary protection mechanism, which applies in step across all EU countries.
Do you need to apply for the extension
No. This is the key point to remember: the extension happens automatically, with no need to submit a separate application or contact the foreign police. You do not have to prove your right to keep the status or go through the procedure again — the validity date simply moves forward for everyone already under temporary protection.
How to check that your status is valid
Despite the automatic extension, it makes sense to confirm for yourself that everything is recorded correctly in the system — especially if you are planning a trip, the extension of an employment contract or an application for benefits. You can check that your status is current through the portal of the Ministry of the Interior (Ministerstvo vnútra SR). If the check shows an old date or anything that does not match what you expect, go to the foreign police department where your dočasné útočisko was issued and clarify the situation there. For a detailed step-by-step walkthrough of the renewal procedure itself, see the article «How to extend temporary protection status at your local Úrad».
The paper confirmation and the residence document
After registering for dočasné útočisko and submitting the application, you receive an A4 paper confirmation. This document temporarily stands in for the full residence document (doklad o pobyte) — the plastic card with a photograph, which is issued later.
It is important to understand the timings: the paper confirmation is valid for no more than 90 days from the date of issue — that is the period allowed for producing the full document. If after that period you still have only the A4 sheet and not the plastic card, check on the progress of your document at the relevant police department. There is more on how the document itself is renewed in the article «How to renew your temporary protection document in Slovakia».
If you did not order a doklad o pobyte straight away
It happens that at the moment of first registration a person cannot yet give a precise delivery address for the document — for example, because they are still looking for somewhere to live. In that case you can order the residence document later, separately from registering the status. To do so you need to book a new appointment through the Ministry of the Interior’s reservation system. It is not worth putting this off for long: without the plastic card it is harder to prove your status at banks, with employers or when arranging other paperwork, where a doklad o pobyte rather than a paper confirmation is often required.
What temporary protection status gives you
A valid dočasné útočisko allows you to:
- stay in Slovakia legally, with no limit on the number of days;
- work without a separate work permit;
- study in Slovak schools, nurseries and on courses;
- use healthcare on the same terms as the compulsory insurance system;
- apply for social benefits and other forms of support available to odídenci.
All these rights carry on automatically until the new date — 4 March 2027 — unless the Council of the EU and the Slovak government decide otherwise sooner.
When the status stops being valid
Dočasné útočisko ends not only when its term expires. There are other cases worth bearing in mind:
- if a person obtains permanent residence or another type of residence permit in Slovakia, temporary protection status automatically lapses on the day the new permit is issued (for an overview of the residence permit types available in Slovakia, see the article «Types of residence permit in Slovakia»);
- if a person voluntarily gives up the status or receives protection in another country;
- if the decision on the overall duration of temporary protection at EU level is not extended further.
As long as none of these scenarios applies to you, there is nothing to worry about — the status runs automatically and no further steps are required from you.

Health insurance is tied to the status too — who is entitled to which insurance and how much it costs.
What to do right now
If it has been a while since you last checked your documents, spend a few minutes doing the following: go to the Ministerstvo vnútra SR portal and make sure the validity date of your status has been updated to 4 March 2027; check whether you have the plastic doklad o pobyte in hand and not just the A4 sheet; and if the document has not arrived yet and its production deadline is approaching, book an appointment in good time rather than waiting until the last moment.
The temporary protection situation in Slovakia remains stable, and the extension to March 2027 gives you time to plan — for work, your children’s schooling and renting a home. But as with any status tied to deadlines and documents, it is better to keep an eye on it and not leave the formalities until later.
